Track 10
Every Hidden Color
“I” (excerpt)

from Luz
(Streamline)
Federico Durand and Nicholas Szczepanik work together as the duo Every Hidden Color. Durand weaves simple melodies together with field recordings made in the heart of Argentina. He adores books, autumn, John Keats’s poetry, botanical prints and Earl Grey tea. Szczepanik’s audio narratives are influenced by contemporary philosophy and fiction, and address the modern human condition with maximum emotional impact.

"Luz" (Streamline, 2012) reviewed by Fluid Radio

EVERY HIDDEN COLOR: LUZ
Posted On: October 7, 2012

Environmental sounds receding before gentle notes. Notes blurring into tones. Tones washing into grains, and fading into clouds and spaces. Spaces filled by the sound of rain…
These two long-form pieces are the result of collaboration between Federico Durand and Nicholas Szczepanik – both authors of fantastic albums this year – Durand’s ‘El Libro De Los Árboles Mágicos’ and Szczepanik’s ‘Please Stop Loving Me’ – the first an expert blend of field recordings and electronic textures, the latter a wonderfully realized slice of choral drone.
There is always a danger that collaboration will result in less than the whole – either each player backs off too much, too respectful and we lose their individual voices, or both deploys every bag-of-tricks they know to try and snare the spotlight. Happily, there is none of this here. We can guess at who might be responsible for leading each segment; the evolving drone in the second half of the first side bears Szczepanik’s fingerprints – the interplay of recordings and textures that bookend it feel more like Durand’s, but to ‘train-spot’ these passages misses the point of most collaborative practices, and the quality of the music here.
Having open, slow moving pieces works to the music’s advantage – rather than try to distill ideas into four or six pieces, segments, ideas, themes, sounds, are given space to unspool slowly (like the sound of film spooling through projector that runs through the opening minutes of side 2). While this can lead to hours of aimless noodling – a cd-r is can feel a very long seventy-four minutes – here the shifts between longer passages are perfectly timed; a looped vocal phoneme pings gently between speakers, and twenty seconds later, the entrance of plucked chords – a hint of banjo – changes the focus beautifully.
The second side slides in and out of focus – like the sepia pink-toned photograph on the cover – sometimes highlighting notes and chords, sometimes slipping back into time-dilating waves of granular sound. These shifts between textures are a joy to listen to – never jarring, never simply one obliterating the other – a sense of four hands at the desk, working with one mind.
This is a gem of an album; beautiful, thoughtful, that creates its own sense of time by giving its many ideas space to unfold. Guaranteed to reward repeated listens, get this while you can. Recommended!

Una hermosa reseña en Rockdelux, España

Federico Durand

"El libro de los árboles mágicos"
Home Normal

Every Hidden Color

"Luz"
Streamline-Drag City-¡Pop Stock!

In a beautiful catalogue

My album "El libro de los árboles mágicos" is featured in this beautiful catalogue by Pastel Records, Japan.

Album of the month @ Electroaocustic Tales

Long awaited but finally released the ‘Luz’ LP by Every Hidden Color is on heavy rotation over here. Combining forces of drone artist Nicholas Szczepanik and ambient composer Federico Durand this record is an ambitious project that works with field recordings, drone layers and minimalistic melodic parts and both artists handwriting is shimmering through the richly textured soundscapes.
Anticipating the conclusion the album is simply sublime in every respect and consequently is listed as the album of the month September.
Sometimes you get completely lost in the deeply breathing drones that are full of warmth and comfort. It’s difficult to explain but nearly automatically I lean back in my chair and just let the music happen. Yes, the music happens and not just plays as it seems to tell so much about nature, life, colours and landscapes. That’s at least what I think to hear. Actually there are no titles for the parts of the album so I might be wrong. Anyway, later you realize that an introspective and minimalistic melody just slowly came in and added even some more beauty to the overall sound. Sure, I didn’t praise an album that much for a long time – be it the long time I’ve been waiting for this one to be released – but it’s one of the best releases this year so far. By the way, side B reminds me a lot of one of my favourite releases ever (‘Minima Moralia‘ by Chihei Hatakeyama).
Thank you very much, Electroacoustic Tales! F.

Every Hidden Color review @ Brainwoshed (USA)

A perfect pairing, Every Hidden Color is Argentina's Federico Durand and the US' Nicholas Szczepanik, both relatively young purveyors of dreamlike ambient music.  There are not really any surprises on this two track LP, which is a good thing:  it is a carefully constructed work that mixes beautiful, formless tonal drift with rich melodies of subtle construction.
While Szczepanik has been rather prolific in short, diverse pieces (such as his Ante Algo Azul series of 12 3" cds), Durand has stuck mostly to the album length format, on works for Spekk and Own Records.  The two side-long pieces that make up Luz then seems to be a perfect middle ground for the two artists to work within.
The introduction to the A side of this work is really the only time that things are harsh:  a combination of fuzzy, almost abrasive noises and field recordings, creating a sense of tense urban chaos, which is soon counteracted by the appearance of delicate melodies.  These repeating tonal structures weave in and out, becoming the center of attention and enveloping the field recordings into a rich, powerful piece of music.  Slowly, almost imperceptibly throughout, these individual notes begin to blend together into a shimmering, amorphous drone that conveys the same lush beauty, but in a less structured manner.  Oddly enough, it is on a colder, isolated, almost creepy note that the side ends.
On the other side, more pastoral field recordings are mixed with looped, abstract textures to fascinating effect.  Atop this, slightly treated guitar is placed, mostly just delayed, so it retains the instrument’s natural sound.  The combination of conventional sounding guitar and processed, textural ambience works well together, and eventually the whole thing is bolstered by what sounds like layers of droning synthesizers, ending the album on a drifting, billowy passage.
Throughout Luz, a sense of delicate, but powerful beauty emanates from the layers of electronic sound and cautious melodies.  An unending stream of tone flows like a slow river, carrying glorious textures with it.  While there is an admirable simplicity to the way the album is constructed, it is by no means sparse or skeletal, it has just enough going on to be captivating, while still remaining meditative and calm.  Durand and Szczepanik compliment each other perfectly, and the result is a beautiful piece of sonic experimentation.

Chroniques Electroniques

El libro de los árboles mágicos
Sortie : juin 2012
Label : Home Normal
Genre : Field Recordings, Electronica, Ambient
Note : 9/10

A beautiful review by Fluid Radio

FEDERICO DURAND – EL LIBRO DE LOS ÁRBOLES MÁGICOS
Posted On: June 11, 2012

A sense of place. And a sense of time, passing. These are the aims of much of the music we might describe as operating on experimental frequencies. Whether conjured through field recordings, the description of resonating spaces – both real and imaginary, both acoustic and electronic, or the associations of particular instruments, these recordings aim for a world beyond simply ‘the studio’ and ‘the stage’.
With this expanded world at their fingertips, composers look beyond the everyday to the imagined, the idealized and the nostalgic. Thinking beyond such simplified areas as the ‘soundtrack to an imaginary film’, works emerge that are drawn from memory and dreams as much as documentary invocations of place.
El libro de los árboles mágicos is composer Federico Durand’s homage to the village in rural Argentina where his mother lives – drawn from “the voice of that reality and also its echo, which is born out of dream and fantasy.” There are field recordings aplenty here, the chirruping of birds, the crunch of boots on gravel, or maybe snow, the rush of a summer downpour, but from the overlapping chords of Crisantemo onwards, this is no simple snapshot of a place at one moment in time.
Instead, there is a gentle progression from the day to day idyll of the valleys to the heights and solitude of the mountains – suggested by the way the balance of the album shifts from more environmental sounds to more in depth, electronic processes – a move from a photo album to a dream perhaps?
As such, the album presents itself as a journey – and yes, a gentle sense of time passing – summer to late autumn. The extended washes of sound, hints of delayed piano, and expertly placed environment sounds combine to a serene, almost stately whole. Highlights? The way the undulating electronics and backwards attacks of La edad dels bosque overlap with the high-summer sounds of crickets. The almost fanfare like quality of the final track, with its touches of looped zither or harp like tones.– Recommended!

Label : Home Normal (Japan)
Cat.No : homen036
Release date : June 15th, 2012 (WORLDWIDE)
Edition : 500
Release description: There is a little mountain village in Córdoba, Argentina, called La Serranita. There lives my mother. Her house is a simple, rural cabin placed on a hill. Everything in it matches perfectly with the spirit of the place. A house to live in during heavy winter storms. Behind the house there is a path which leads to Anisacate river. Here and there you can see bushes, eucalyptus and espinillos which either sleep or blossom in the shelter of the seasons. Sometimes, at dusk, an owl appears while invisible insects whisper among the leaves. And in the vicinity of the mountain path there grow plants of rosemary, mint and other herbs you can make infusions with. ‘El libro de los árboles mágicos’ is dedicated to that place, to the crystalline community of its people, to the animals and things. In fact, this album is more like a storybook. Every musical piece takes the voice of that reality and also its echo, which is born out of dream and fantasy. (Federico Durand)
All music by Federico Durand, except piece 1 which is a collaboration with Chihei Hatakeyama, piece 4 with Fuqugi and piece 5 with Ian Hawgood, originally released on ‘Slow Films in Low Light’ (Home Normal 013).
